SuperFerry makes hundreds of people wait at the terminal that the ship is canceled, stranding hundreds of families.

SuperFerry notifies their corporate Facebook page at 4pm (thank you! keep it up its free and powerful!) yet the passengers are already waiting in the terminal. The terminal keeps everyone waiting till 7pm to announce that we are delayed. Why? Maybe to sell more tickets? dunno. just thinking why make thousands of people wait overnight, kids, infants crying a mess of human tragedy.

This is what arrogance gets you, spend so much on stupid push marketing (the damn song Superferry Tayo!) comes to mind. yet cant get simple (FREE) tools like Twitter and Facebook right.

Wake the hell up guys the majority of your customers are not as lucky as me, they can't take a taxi to their family, they are stuck in the terminal eating instant noodles with their 2 screaming babies sleeping on their luggage.

Business Relationships

Partners happy and fruitful

Scott Farrell has his house, and his daughter is well, maybe second marriage, he has his own gym, fitness course he invented of course, a bestselling book for business under his belt, and one in the works on how to do a mean bbq. He has a couple Rx7’s which he modified, and he speaks at large events.

Taylor married, happy two homes one in SF one in Thailand with a condo in Philippines –Taylors’ laid back and peaceful style wins him a lot of business, he is sought after and does quite well in the continuation of the Mobile Web Industry in America. Taylor has written a book titled ‘The 42 Hour Work Day’ which pokes fun at but tells the truth about the amount of energy one must put into a business to see it become great.

Kevin:

People are my greatest value and asset. I continue to foster and nurture healthy relationships on both a personal and professional level. I am known as the guy that will help you move house if you need too. People like my authenticity, it becomes a bit much for the plastic corporate crowd, but that is okay I have accepted my role, embraced my personality as I am drawn to Mavericks and they to me.

I have very few clients that I hand pick, I have evolved from helping every kid with a big idea, to the clients that resonate with me. On the heels of 3 very successful years of exponential growth in which we squared the revenue of the year before (not doubled). I am known for being the matchstick to an innovation movement with a nexus in Philippines that pushed through South East Asia.(following the business process movement, self empowerment is only logical) I am happy in my business relationships.

My close colleagues and business partners are my family- able to be confronted, able to be moved from one seat into another – able to fail, and remain close trusted and loved.

Business

We get shit done. Our no nonsense get in and get dirty D.I.Y. working man, punk rock ethics are something of legend. In a world of noise and hype full of self proclaimed guru’s and experts, we forgo the social media masturbation and focus on business and results. The sound of a cash register, and happy clients and markets is all we hear. We have a digital sign that is updated on successful clients and clients of our clients that we have empower and enabled. Like McDonalds billions served we have something quite similar.

Our ideas are successful our clients become MIT , Harvard, Oxford, AIM case studies, become courseware, become a movement .

By focusing on movements, and shifts rather than discrete services or products we have formed a startup network cult that has seriously changed the world.

We do not gamble but we place everything we have behind big hairy audacious goals. Like the next Moon Shot, we help individuals and companies with big ideas execute and get it done.

Business is business, and creating new business models wherein none previously existed, and inventing what has not yet been imagined are our unspoken mantra.

We see what can be, we shape the future and the course of not the industry but mankind.

There is no one close many have tried to emulate the team’s success, many copies have grown, some even directly ripping off our work, but we don’t mind. We have a list of out right haters, people government groups that do not like us, or what we do, these haters in fact tell us we are doing something right.

We love the unreasonable. We love the unthinkable, then we turn around and help that blow away traditional industries and markets.

We are blue ocean innovators, combining process, technologies creating new concepts that did no longer exist.

Our companies YEAR ends 12 December and we give each employee, 5 to 6 weeks vacation a year.

We have very very few full time employees, we have set up service companies or relationships with them to keep any and all overheads to the absolute minimum.

We sponsor kids, charter schools and really push our belief that any person despite circumstance can and will change the world.

Because we have co created new revenue markets and business models that did not previously exist, our company revenue stream is exponential.

Personally:

I am making about $2500per day or $11,000(USD/AUD/EURO/GBP whatever is highest) per week. This translates to about $45k per month.

I make an additional $25k or so per month from the other assets that I have grown. These assets include property that makes income, small retail but successful business, and ventures that I have co created with Scott, Taylor and my other colleagues.

I have two residences and one condo for work. One on Ticao Island with land has been designed and built by us for us, and is secure and beach side on a beach that we own. The other in Manly is quaint and private and has a phenomenal panoramic view. The condo is for work and within Philippines near one of our offices. I drive DB7 or DB9 Merc AME in Australia I also own the typical family ute ;o)

I enjoy my life, when I work I work, when I spend time with my family I spend time with them. I take Fridays off and make mandatory work at home Weds for non essential staff.

Alma is happy, my relationship is healthy and good, my kids are strong, smart and speak well. Alma manages the home and home businesses with accounting precision. I trust her to make the proper decisions, and she has become a Proverbs 31 woman.

My family remains who they are and that is fine, we have come to terms and acceptance of the other. I continue to love them from afar, and trust that their lives go well, they exist happy and stay out of mine. ;-D

I have cleared all personal debt, both in karma, and in cash. I exist peaceful, content, and at peace with myself. I relish the evolution from where I was into the Man I am.

I am a warrior in heart and spirit.

I awake early because I want too. I run, paddle out for a surf or take a swim. I study the martial arts and Kung Fu. I walk, run everywhere and often ride bikes.

I give no pity expect none, empathy is fine, I hold others accountable for what they say, as they do me. I accept 100% accountability for my life, make the decisions and steps to get there. That being said I understand James that faith without actions is dead, and that the best laid plans still fall under the Grace of God.

When I pray I move my feet, and I understand God gave me a heart to love and dream, a mind to plot the course to get there, and the guts to make it happen. I look at my two hands and I work.

Lord expand my territory, bless the work of my hands, let me cause no harm and give me 10,000 times the anointing you gave David, Solomon and Paul.

Tech Invention and Startups Create Economic Growth AND Value versus BPO Value in Service

Internet marketers and their ilk don't innovate or create - these individuals simply market and peddle. So their focus is to give virtual service jobs. While these jobs employ and that's a damn great thing, the service mindset is a double edged sword.

If your focused on servicing others and what they do, your not focusing on inventing or creating.

Inventing or Creating is Growth, it provides value real economic value.

With the clients I pick, seek and market too, I am looking at building new, innovative and disruptive things. In my spare time, I have my own projects too. I speak, mentor, train and push innovation and creation not servicing.

I live in the Philippines and I see and deal with the realities of life here.

Its tough, brutal, and at times scary.

Imagine my surprise to find out Vodaphone posts fake secuity video showing that their store was broken into. This marketing ploy of course backfired. Didn't anyone in Senior Management say:

'You want to Fake and Post and Publish that we where Robbed as a marketing ploy!? What That is Special Olympic Country and Western Retarded You ARE FIRED Get the Hell out of my office!'

Sadly they went ahead from News 3 NZ VodaPhone is VodaFail as Marketing Stunt Flops:

Vodafone has admitted faking a break in at its Queen Street retail store to promote... something.
Last night, the company uploaded bogus security footage to YouTube and tweeted to its followers: "regret to advise the ... launch will be delayed. Major security breach. The shipment ... has been stolen".
Today, sceptical Vodafone fans began questioning the theft claim on the company's Facebook page, noting the security camera footage had a suspiciously high frame rate, odd horizontal lines typical of fake 'lo-fi' videos and no time stamp.

Why Men need Beer, Punk Rock and War Movies

So this weekend in between working and training I spent watching 'The Pacific.'

Back Story

It might sound odd, but imagine if a whole country shut down for the week before Easter. That is what it is like here in the Philippines, the week before Easter, the cities are like ghost towns as everyone flocks to their province of origin and spend it with Families. Holy Week this year was lonely, I sat here in solitude, really reflecting on life, where I was, where I wanted to go- and how I was going to get there.

This weekend was another great reprieve. Something to remind me of what was important- and what I really wanted in life.

Enter The Pacific.

Following the lives of young men through 'The Pacific Theater of War' this ten part series was really well done. I was really moved by the story of John Basilone After winning the Congressional Medal of Honor he went and lived a rockstar party life. Until something changed him, he got to the point in his life where he wanted to go back and make a difference. He felt out of place with the glamor and media madness, he opted for a return to his original passion. There, once back into preparation for his return to battle, he fell in love and married. All this happened just before returning to the Pacific, where he was sadly killed on the battle for Iwo Jima.

I was moved that a man found a purpose in life greater than himself. That he was capable of extreme love and devotion as well as the true grit and ability needed in warfare. A man amongst men.

War movies if done well, have the ability to showcase something bigger than a man. Something that pushes us past our selves. Musashi the Japanese Samurai wrote in the 'Book of 5 Rings' you can never win a battle unless you are able to accept Death first.

You (we) must go forward without fear of loosing.

Listening to Punk Music, Drinking Beer and Watching War movies all weekend healed me, aligned me and focused me. Maybe shit like this is a way to get back to the reality of 'WHAT REALLY MATTERS'

Answer for yourself I guess what, is really important in your life?

To that end, my answer was, I want my love, I want to do something important, I want to directly affect change, I want to do, be a part of something bigger than me and my selfish wants.

I desire to do something great. Not for my glory, But for my Creator, and for future generations of Men.

Like John Basilone found during the course of his life, I hope to get back to my passion, focus on what is important and inspire something in me and others more than a good time, Hollywood Starlets and cheap madness.

Beer has a way of making all this more of a reality. Why do men love Beer so much? Maybe this is part of it. We are so much different than women, you do not hear men saying to another:

'Lets just talk...'

Men don't call each other and chit chat, and if we do meet up its always over coffee or a beer.

Never really anything else.

That ability to unwind, let the stiffness out of the day night glory & unleash itself with a few ounces is a blessing in disguise. Throughout my life I have enjoyed too much, gotten accustomened to its glory and forgot how to function otherwise.

I remember a time in Australia going through a very terrible period wherein I was drinking every day for over a month, my buddy Noel Posus looked at me and said:

'Kevin this is not YOU, this is an EVENT'

Him saying that, struck me, I went home put on all sorts of sweaters and jogging pants, ate a really huge bowl of Indonesian Chili noodle soup (with massive raw garlic) and just sweat out the toxins. Since that period, I have never had an issue with drinking. It psychologically changed my relationship with Drinking Beer for the rest of my life.

All too often I realize, I mistake EVENTS, and BATTLES in my life, for the entire WAR, and CAMPAIGN.

Life is more like The Pacific, its a campaign, its a series of battles, and victories with Glamor, Holidays, breaks and Love avail to those who are ready to accept it.

For what it was all worth I saw it, him, that moment of life slowly fading.

Having been through first the Client Server bubble of the 1990's to the Dot Com Bubble, Web 2.0 Bubble and the Hype that now is Social Media I can relate to this video.

Hype is, what it is. The point to all of this is, that hard work, quality work, and dedication will pay off. Very few will be the outliers that strike a nerve that ensure the amazing viral success that we often hear about. Often it is just being at that right place and time in which the current population has a meme that resonates.

All things being equal there are great men and women amongst us that we will never hear, know about and enjoy. This is the nature of the Universe and has nothing at all to do with their abilities or value.

Got a cool email from Linkedin this am, reminding me that I was one of the first million who joined. i remember hating linkedin because at the time I was busy trying to launch my own Social Network Platform in Sydney.

I realized this morning whilst enjoying my cuppa I got a lot of Hating going on. I guess technology and business execution jealousy gets the most of me. It stops me from being productive - and I come off sounding bitter, stupid and dumb.

So for all those times I complained about others beating me to the punch- or doing better - I realize I sounded like someone peed in my Cheerios I humbly apologize. For as it is now whilst Sit here on a Intense Tropical Rain in Cebu City, Philippines staring at my banana trees, I realize Life is Bliss and perfect, what was, is behind me, right now all I got is the present and the ideas dreams and directions I love and see.

Every year for years I have written about what I have learned, its looking backward, and I want to follow this up with what I project or plan for 2011...

Pray. When you Pray, Move your feet.
God seriously does answer prayer, and yes he does it in 'Real Time'
Forgive. Then move on.
Be Humble.
Work Hard. Then work harder then when you can't do anymore, work more.
Relationships are everything
Be very careful who you let close to you.
Trust, love are stronger than worry and fear.
Arrogance and Ignorance are really fear and laziness in disguise
This too shall pass
Light a candle do not curse the darkness. ;-)
People are not disposable- but if they are negative/victims, try to show them, but also stay away.
Follow your heart, even when it scares you.

What I want for 2011:

Prosperity, Joy, Friendship and Love.

Ticao Island Masbate, Possibly my last blog of 2010

The rain is something else, really heavy solid tropical rainy season rain. Its December in Bicol Region Ticao Masbate Philippines. The Web is only on a few towns that are lucky enough, No Globe (a telecommunications carrier) Mobile Signal, so the iPhone is reduced to a palm pilot / game platform.

The motor bike rides are interesting after it rains the few bridges of wood are a bit hard to navigate.

Its amazingly beautiful, every day I have been eating organic rice, pristine clear water from natural spring. I had Shark with coconut Milk for breakfast, eel for lunch, fresh crabs for Merienda, and fresh (that afternoon) caught tuna grilled on coconut husk with ice cold beer.

Sometimes you want Bad-Usability.

Like this- when you go to 7-11 the milk and bread (BEER) is at the back of the store because they want you to walk past the cookies and potato chips/NACHO MACHINE.

So when you design a business sometimes you put the Beer in the Back so that people have to walk thru so they buy more. Kind of like the annoying sales pages.

Why Long Sales Pages Work
I’m not a copywriting expert and reading the archives of copyblogger will give you a more in-depth analysis of copywriting psychology, but here’s my take on why a long sales page comes up on top.
The long sales page contains the entire gamut of possible discussion going on in the head of a potential customer (well ideally anyway). If you need to account for all possible rejections, questions and variables that could enter the mind of a prospect during that crucial buying decision time, you need to use a lot of words.
People have short attention spans and do not like to take action. That’s a fact, anyone who runs a website knows how hard it is to keep attention or convince someone to click something. If you attempt to “pretty up” a long sales page and make navigation “easier” by adding internal links, navigation bars, drop down content, etc, you create actions that people simply won’t do. Instead they will click away and leave your page, thus hurting your conversion rate.
To combat the above point, all the content is presented on one page and copywriters use headings as the navigation cues. The page is designed to work from top to bottom just scanning the headlines. As Frank Kern recently pointed out in his Mass Control launch, if you look at most well-written long sales pages you can read the headlines – only the headlines – to garner the entire story from start to finish. Scanners will scroll down the page, stop at the headings that grab their attention, read that content and begin scanning again.
Again to combat point 2, the only clickable option is the buy button/link, which ideally is inserted many times down the page using varying text. If your page is designed to sell, then give people the option to buy and nothing else.
The big bold red headlines and all the other font wackiness you see in long sales page work because it attracts attention. Everything comes down to this. If you cannot engage attention right from the start then you’re done – you make no sales. Obviously testing is the ultimate conclusion, but to me it just makes sense if you want someone to read something then use the format that is most likely to grab their eyeballs from the beginning.

Facebook Deals uses Facebook 'Places' but get this Facebook gets to keep the user data.

This is why I am a bit concerned, as a business, the most important thing in the whole wide world is the customer information. I want to know who my customers are, where they are at, and how they got there.

Why? So I can track my marketing dollar and use it more effectively.

Facebook says they are protecting users personal data. Bullshit Facebook gets to keep all this data, and use it to better sell shit to the users of facebook, meanwhile local businesses are using Facebook 'Deals' and not getting the benefit of the user information.

Here is the thing- be 100% transparent, TELL the user, if you choose to OPT IN to Facebook PLACES you will get FACEBOOK DEALS, this will share your personal data with the local store giving you free stuff/discounts etc.

In this way local stores (hey they have the burden of retail physical space, at least let them know who is saying what about them and looking etc)

Facebook is not the Web, it is a semi closed platform, its growth is impressive, but the closed doors on Web Marketing that Facebook uses for their own gain whilst not giving local business the metrics and info of who may be interested in their products (personal information my ass)

Heart and Passion but Purpose Comes First

I found, and find that I keep learning that. We have to grow as biological beings I believe- that is if your business, your life - your relationships are not growing we feel miserable.

In the past couple months I have been reading, studying, learning and listening to try to figure out what direction is next. The time spent absorbing has paid off...

I am so excited jumping out of bed at 5:50am can't wait to get back into it. its really wonderful to have this peace, direction and vigor.

Building the team Good to Great style not doing a 'Startup' but launching a business...

Now this is the way to go.

Anti hype, just deliver solid services, use the profit to bootstrap our tech repeat.

The biggest issue I have found is my home life. When I work my life is wonderful. When I get online, wow its so much fun, the work I have the relationships the meetings- the work we get done fantastic. I hate going home. So I had to focus on removing the home drama from my life. Having a simple life full of peace, happiness, reverance and to honor God.

Getting my life of peace has done so much for the rest of my life. I realized only I am to blame for manifesting- and choosing the people in my life and that choice was the one.

I have to Love me first.

Its a great thing illumination. wonderful. First it hurts so hard but in the end its wonderful.

The Myth of Freelance

First I gotta be honest – no it is not as if anyone is expecting someone to dish out the dirty laundry – but I have really been in a deep funk trying to figure out what is next in technology- what is next in myself.

Maybe it’s the host and myriad of things that face humanity each of us have our own quest seeking searching and reaching for answers in our own lives – in ourselves. The past three months have had me really scratching my head trying to figure out what is next and what to do.

I made a Bad Hire Decision in July that about cost me everything- like seriously three clients and worse. Powerful lesson – from that point I have decided to QUIT SELLING.

I haven’t closed any new deals or even sought too.
I’m hungry, my cash and business have dwindled down but I am focusing. Focus.
Taking time to read, to study, to align myself, my life- to be alone – to create.
This quiet time, solace has been incredibly fruitful.

I don’t exactly have the answer right now- I know I will not commit my life energy until I make sure the sales and marketing energies I put into can be delivered. I have spent over a year doing the small deal web outsourcing and VA work. Peddling Wordpress sites, FanPages, Copywriting, VA and more.

What I have found is headaches, backaches, the myth of freelance, the myth of crowdsourcing the technical skills.

I don’t believe in the hype anymore. I am finding I now loathe and hate the very concept of ‘Sourcing’ I cring with a cold sweat…I have dreams where I wake up feeling just terrible this Project failed again because the developer ran off.

The abundance of Odesk, and other type Freelance sites has created a network of irresponsibility. Agree to a project, then flake off, hide behind email, take the cash and run leaving both the project not finished. I am left with the project and the nightmare.

Stomach acid is too much- and how in the hell did I ever get into this position?

Hustling without clear direction or purpose. (survival mode)

I got so busy hustling, if you need anything done on the Web, I am your guy. I can pull the teams together, and bam here we go. This is what I have done now for about 4 years, project work…with a stable of reliable solid guys – I go hunting- they deliver, I hustle they code.

Only the market has changed.

Reliable guys have moved to big business they want the plastic key cards, the free beer and pizza and I don’t blame them. Without a vision of where you are going and what you are doing – you end up being just another technology schmuck with hundreds of projects under the belt not excited about anything, beating up the clients to make their monthly payment, chasing down the admin making sure log ins are correct.

I thought it I focused on Process this time it would be different.

What I found is that juggling so much and trying to build a business with the POVERTY rates that Web Development gets done= you have little room for error.

What I did for $5,000.00 three years ago I was now doing for $800 if I was lucky. Dealing with teams in different time zones I have grown these past two years to understand I never want American Clients.

I am American, Redneck even, and I admire love and deeply respect my country. But I hate Small American business.

Here is why= so far my experience is their demands are impossible. They will send you an email (3am your time) then berate you because you didn’t answer it within their business day.

I have had several individuals hire VA’s and after two weeks of up to three people working- they will not only NOT Pay their VA’s they will dispute the fees they paid via Paypal.

Now I have to pay 3 VA’s and have no cash from the client.

Its happened four times since July.

I’ve had it.

I am done doing projects at poverty rates. I am done pouring my heart and soul into work – to have no answer on emails, and having them shop me down.

There was a time – I built great things, delivered amazing results and invented. How I got so far from the tree is beyond me.

I know I am bitching= bear with me.

The advancement of a freelance has reduced professional responsibilities. Why bother if you get stuck on a project or it becomes too much work? Just hide behind email and run away.

TEAMS not individuals – BUSINESS not part time freelance bullshit.

So what works and what doesn’t?

One Reputation, my Grandfather always said,

‘If a man does not have his word he has nothing.’

Two Teams, it is the collective intelligence and history of working together that determines outcome. Now I will deliver stuff that I can do on my own all day long, as I can control the process, the copywriting what have you- but for bigger stuff the team is the most important thing.

Three Clear Vision, if you are aiming at nothing you will hit it every time – what business problem are you solving?

Four Hustle. Without a history, without a solid team, without vision your not going to get anything done.

So I am glad I have spent this time thinking, studying, and really looking at what works and what doesn’t.

Here is to the next big thing.

Last night was interesting-Imagine a stranger telling you everything about you-in detail.

Last night was interesting- I live a few hours out of Manila now, and for me to go to my Bible Study is like 2+ hours in a heavy rain during rush hour. All the way there I was staring through the window just thinking.

When I got to my small group, we had a guest- a really jolly, round Jewish Christian Spirit Filled Minister fresh from Jerusalem. It was a really good night, I have never seen him or spoke to him – more interesting was that I have not been to my small group in about a year, and the only one that knows anything about what is going on in my life, did not know I was going to go to Bible Study – and he was late.

They recorded the bible study so when I get a copy I will send it.

This amazing man of God who has seen so much, this Jewish Minister said to me:

God has called you Kevin, since you where a little, little boy, and the enemy has tried to stamp this out many times. That he has laid traps for you Kevin, (and here he paused) but do not worry God has removed those.

You have been through Hell. (and he started to weep) You have been through Hell, and
And you have been here for five years (and he counted off on his fingers the five years, each finger he said what happened that year) and that you have been called to this Country, You have been called to the Philippines, and you do not have to worry your heart God has heard you, your God has heard you and he has given you your woman, She is from this land, She is from this nation and blood. And she is for you. Are you ready? 2011 you are married Kevin (No one knew that I have been praying for this)

And I see a little little boy a very little Kevin, and your family your spiritual family and the family you are praying for to be restored, no- new because you were not…, new because it not was, I see all your family around you and a big big turkey. (note- no one knew that I was leaving and that its thanksgiving soon) and you are not the same Kevin, You are not the same Kevin, You are not the Kevin that Anyone knows. God has called you and you are no longer the same.

And Kevin you are called – you have to speak Kevin, you are a great teacher Kevin and you are still in the Marketplace, I see media, and Kevin God has called you to great and many things. He is your voice.

He went on and I can’t remember the rest but he grabbed me and hugged me for a long time and wept and he prayed over me for protection and for me to know that God loves me, that he has me in his arms and that I don’t have to be alone and do not have to worry.

He commanded the men to hug me, and to feed me. To meet with me. And he said a few more prophecies into the night. And all I know is I can’t really remember much other than this.

This blog is an Apology to Janette Torral over my comparing SEO/Blogs versus the success we are having with Facebook. I foolishly bullied my point when her response was using the Genius of ‘And’

This story actually starts circa 1983, in a small town high in the Arizona Verde Valley. The Shadow of Mingus Mountain had not yet hit the schoolyard where 3 small boys played in the mid day sun. The Lights Reflecting off windows and mirrors of old Ghost Town Jerome played contrast to the GiJoe Skystriker Aircraft as it was lost in the Sun swooping down to rain havoc and destruction on the Terrorist Organization known as COBRA.

I was playing with Matt Waddup in the rare occasion he Played GiJoe as he preferred tetherball. We where part of the Elite GiJoe team, I had Snake Eyes, and he had Clutch and the VAMP Military Action Vehicle.

That is when the Bully Shouted
‘Storm Shadow Beats Snake Eyes’ wham! Wham!

‘No Way Man this is SNAKE EYES’ I shouted.

‘Yes But My Storm Shadow Beats YOUR SNAKE EYES’ BECAUSE MINE HAS THE KUNG FU GRIP = YOURS IS OLD, ITS SO FOURTH GRADE!’

‘Kung Fu Grip!?’ I was secretly angry at my Snake Eyes, how could he let me down at a time when the Joe Force needed him?

‘But! My Snake Eyes is still Good! – (I said in Defense)

He don’t Need the Kung Fu Grip to hold his UZI!’ and with a ratatattat my Snake Eyes (sans Kung Fu Action Grip) shot the Hell out of his Storm Shadow holding a sword.

Moral of the Story Storm Shadow Learned that day= Never bring a knife to a Gun Fight.

So if I remember right the bully chased me around the school yard crying hitting me in the back, I was afraid -as he was ‘Held Back’ in 3rd grade should have been in 6th grade and had the beginnings of a deeper voice.

Last night- I was the one complaining that My Storm Shadow Facebook Marketing ‘Kung Fu Action Grip’ Beat Janette’s Snake Eyes.

I’m surprised I didn’t resort to saying my older sister could beat up her brother.

Sales Funnel, Sales Pages and Fanpage Monster

In the past my forte has been Social Media- primarily Blogging- in a Professional Sense I made Money on high end Web Applications (Software We built for ourselves and marketed). This is where I really built up a love for cool web technology.

In 1997-2001 I did a lot of Email marketing, and commenting on message boards. I was very successful in tying in viral things – like a refer a friend etc.

The web changed- I went to social media- and mostly focused on building the technology behind it.

The market shifted in 2008- I lost my clients- I didn’t shift and soon my $12K a month company overhead ate up the cash I had. I lost my company.

Last Year 2009 March I had no more cash despite working hard- somehow I sold not a single thing from Jan 2009-late July I finally sold a small marketing package.

Things didn’t go well until September 2009 I officially met Rajeev Kistoo. Rajeev I had been following a while- and he me. In the Book the Art of the Start- they say find your business soul mate- if ever a man where my biz soulmate- it would be Rajeev. Often he tells me – ‘Kev- go to bed’ and I tell him ‘Rajeev Eat Something’.

Rajeev has been doing Solid Internet Marketing following something called a sales funnel. Its simple and finally made sense to me after about 6 months of working with him as at first I hated it.

See my high brow marketing background (Lucent, TMP WorldWide, Thomas Kinkade) was still fighting with the bootstrap grow mentality.

I hated Sales Pages.

I mean until recently I really really really hated them.

But somehow they work- and the simpler the better.

You may be aware that a couple months ago, I worked with a copywriter to
redo the Conscious Growth Workshop sales page. This particular copywriter was a
referral from a friend and claimed he could greatly increase the conversion rate
of my original sales page.
In the end, however, the sales page he created had
exactly the opposite effect. I let it run for about 6 weeks, and the results
during that time were utterly dismal.
I didn’t do any formal A/B split
testing, but a reasonable estimate based on expected results is that CGW
registrations dropped by roughly a factor of 5 while the copywriter’s version of
the sales page was online. So despite all the various sales techniques he used,
my original no-frills “wall of text” version of that page actually outperformed
his version by 5-to-1. That’s no small difference. That’s a lot of money too (in
the five-figure range).

We have to test and keep testing. The efforts you have on your Web Site and Current Marketing may be really good- maybe you are doing a lot of things right- but- sans testing and constant improving you get lackluster results. (evolving and agility are the heart of everything we do)

I’m not a copywriting expert and reading the
archives of copyblogger will give you
a more in-depth analysis of copywriting psychology, but here’s my take on why a
long sales page comes up on
top.
1.
The long sales page contains the entire gamut of possible discussion going on in
the head of a potential customer (well ideally anyway). If you need to account
for all possible rejections, questions and variables that could enter the mind
of a prospect during that crucial buying decision time, you need to use a lot of
words.
2.
People have short attention spans and do not like to take action. That’s a fact,
anyone who runs a website knows how hard it is to keep attention or convince
someone to click something. If you attempt to “pretty up” a long sales page and
make navigation “easier” by adding internal links, navigation bars, drop down
content, etc, you create actions that people simply won’t do. Instead they will
click away and leave your page, thus hurting your conversion rate.
3.
To combat the above point, all the content is presented on one page and
copywriters use headings as the navigation cues. The page is designed to work
from top to bottom just scanning the headlines. As Frank Kern recently pointed
out in his Mass
Control launch, if you look at most well-written long sales pages you can
read the headlines – only the headlines – to garner the entire story from start
to finish. Scanners will scroll down the page, stop at the headings that grab
their attention, read that content and begin scanning again.
4.
Again to combat point 2, the only clickable option is the buy button/link, which
ideally is inserted many times down the page using varying text. If your page is
designed to sell, then give people the option to buy and nothing else.
5.
The big bold red headlines and all the other font wackiness you see in long
sales page work because it attracts attention. Everything comes down to this. If
you cannot engage attention right from the start then you’re done – you make no
sales. Obviously testing is the ultimate conclusion, but to me it just makes
sense if you want someone to read something then use the format that is most
likely to grab their eyeballs from the beginning.

But Sales Pages are only one part- You still need - Social Media Content: Blogging, Video, Social Media Promotion: Digg, Su.pr, Twitter. Social Media Conversation: Facebook, twitter, linkedin.

hey man to all my Google Buzz followers - I turn 37 in a couple hours, odd this one seems to be really heavy like I think to myself Fuck I am almost 40, What have I really done in my life that impacts and benefits? - Life is a journey and man, I have enjoyed the blessings, travels, people, culture, languages, food and beer. I've loved too many women, and not been loved enough- sometimes I think something must be wrong with me, whilst others seem happy in family routine I have this insane desire to have the family, yet I choose the freedom not having one gives- me. I am more agile, I have been able to go places and do things, and try ideas I could have not. One thing is for sure...I am tired of the punk rock DIY lifestyle. Its time to manifest value I've made inordinate amounts of cash- but never been prosperous. Ingredients

* 2 cups rice
* 4-6 roma tomatoes , very ripe and cored(okay 1 can tomato)
* 1 big white onion (3-4 small red ones)
* one minced head of garlic
* 1/3 cup oil
* 1 cup chicken broth
* Salt and black Pepper to taste
* 1 lime (squeezed juice) can use a couple kalamansi

For the bold

* 1/4 cup minced cilantro
* chopped jalapenos or sili lubuyo/ sili haba

Directions:

Rinse rice really really well, Shake it hard to get ALL the water off (this makes it fluffy and not clumpy)

heat oil in pan, add rice, toast the rice till brown, add garlic, brown garlic, add rest of ingredients, mix it up good, cover and cook for 20 min under low heat till all sauce is absorbed.

Add Minced cilantro and chili ;-) or sharp cheddar cheese on top.

Just gave a very deep and meaningful come-to-Jesus talk about technology and milestones being weeks off.

Guy’s the owner of this project is an unemployed woman, that took out a PERSONAL LOAN to build this. I waited in the Hallway an hour just to get in the office this AM, everyone is ready to leave (and thus I must also) hours before I am ready.

Rajeev and I work hard. It is not uncommon for us to work in two days nearly 40 hours- or 80-90 hours a week

Why?

This is a startup. It is called WORK for a reason. We have to WORK, hard, SMART and fast.

okay so I have to admit I am not the best at speaking Tagalog (Maybe I should take the time to learn Tagalog better)But I can speak enough to know how to get from point a. to point b.

When I first arrived in Manila in January of 2005 I realized right away that the English speaking fluent people were not the ones always driving you around, fixing food and other important things required I quickly get up to speed on my Tag-Lish.

So I pride myself today on not being so much a foreigner I can think in my mind the other blogs I have read where people felt good about their ability to learn local language and culture after a few years of being around.

Yesterday at noon I left Cubao for what would be a ten minute hop to my office not very far away in Katipunan. I'm trying to find a shorter route, a cheaper route, as in commuting that extra 100php you waste a day is over $10 a week and that adds up quickly here and there soon you realize your taxi fare is in the hundreds of bucks a month... *Yes I used to travel a lot that way.

'Hey Joe! where you go?'

So I speak clearly and even whip out my handy Metro Manila Map book.

'Do you go to Katipunan? Santolan Road?'

'Yea Joe hop in'

soon I realize something was wrong as we take this long meandering trip...I finally got off in Marikina way far away with the driver and his accomplice laughing.

Shit.

Had to back track, walk about a mile in the hot near Mid day sun. Just to find the Jeep that would take me back to the same road... not a taxi in sight.

Sigh.

Two hours to go ten minutes and by the time I got to the office I was covered in Sweat ready to strangle someone.

Ah the joys of Manila! ;-)

At the foot of Mayon Volcano

I am here at the foot of Mayon Volcano, its So clear today the mountain is nearly two miles straight up from sea level the amazing size dwarfs you and makes you understand creation. This is one of the most perfectly shaped Cone Volcano’s in the world, its almost kindergarten perfect paper mache’. To make it even more crazy is the fact that it is CURRENTLY active! A small whisper of smoke trails off the top of the cone. Covered in Sub Tropical Rain Forrest this place is simply breathtaking. I’ve been eating the most amazing food, like shark cooked in coconut milk, lots of native chili and fish… its like heaven for a hundred bucks…

What I have learned in 2004

1) Of everything I have ever known and done, I have found that consistency with character and persistence are the most important qualities I can exude.
2) I must take time out for myself.
3) Even in my darkest hour, God is with me.
4) A few days of rest does wonders for all of my life.
5) I have a few true wonderful friends, and I miss and love em a lot.
6) Thoughts are the things that begin everything, by me controlling my thoughts I can then control the rest of my life.
7) To ask others to do anything I must first be willing to do it myself.
8) Disciplined thought, disciplined action, there is really something about my old Uncle getting up every day at 4am and running a couple of miles…
9) I have a finite amount of time, its up to me to organize how I spend it.
10) Happiness is not just a passing emotion, its something I can work and strive for.

What I have learned in 2005

1) Character is Destiny.
2) Trust your Gut, and then get everything in writing.
3) The term Angel Investor can have two meanings.
4) Never mix love and business
5) When in doubt about something, action is better than waiting for better solution.
6) Worry only about the stuff you can change, even when everything seems to have hit the fan, you can only do what you can do, so don’t worry about things you have no control over.
7) Trying to live a life of purpose means planning, following up on those plans and having people challenge you on missing your targets, whether physically, financially or spiritually.
8) Even in my darkest hour God is with me.
9) Laugh, and remember how to play.
10) Take time out for yourself.
11) Share, give and be generous.
12) Pull the weeds and prune your life.
13) Its okay if you don’t know exactly where you are headed, no one else does either.
14) We are all just doing the best we can.
15) I still need to learn to let go.

I have been so busy its insane. Rajeev has been nervous and pestering the shit out of me. My Chicken Pox Cursed and Suffering Developer has had me worrying about his health and silently wondering how we can make up lost time...

My clients have been so cool: all of them have these great new ideas, Happy+Positive, and really into helping WebAnatics, its really nice to have such support and love from clients. Last night had a 2+ hour meeting at an Outsource Center in Makati, started at 12:30am- ended well past two... went into a couple hours of exhausted sleep, then the commute home...then one more hour shut eye, to awaken to alarm wailing many minutes over the time and someone BANGING ferociously on my door. I awoke wondering where I was and what I was doing with my clothes still on. I loathed the commute back into the CBD for an all day workshop...

Coffee and Vitamin B Complex are my hero's, so is sleep and somehow I keep telling myself I'm going to focus on my own home cooked-massive amount of Chili-and-Garlic goodness. And tonight I have another meeting...another workshop...

I've turned down an investment offer here-a partnership offer there- client in this part-and job seekers in that. I have been really focused on getting the RIGHT DNA. It is only Theory. I am reminded of HCI practices = its all theory until you test it.

So is my life currently seeming to prosper and grow? Yes so - How to make sense in all this noise? Despite working 'On the Business' I really need to work 'In the Business' my cash flow is NO WHERE NEAR what I need it to be- I am tired of being the ULTRA LEAN MARKETING MACHINE and want some of those pre-market correction profits I was enjoying. I've stopped almost all social activities- however had a nice weekend as I only worked about 8 hours...

DNA...

The beautiful thing is when you find people that understand what you are saying before you get the words out... They Finish the statement, and often talk about new technologies or process they have- in effect taking your work- and building upon it...

I'm staying deep in the Good to Great Philosophy-
